Spotlight On: McLean & Eakin Booksellers

I am soooo lucky that my family has traveled to Northern Michigan for as long as I can remember.  It is one of my favorite places ON EARTH!  It is so naturally beautiful and basically has an ice cream shop on every corner (a vacation spot must, in my opinion!).  It also has a ton of unique, independent shops, including bookstores galore.

Around the holidays, I ranted about the lack of independent bookstores were we live (see here).  So when we travel, I ALWAYS make sure to visit the local, independent bookstore and make a purchase.  I truly feel like these gems are so important to promoting literacy.  Whenever we visit, my kids go nuts! There are usually something for the kids to do and there are tons of fun and exciting books and activities to take home to promote reading!  This may be the inner geek in me, but I seriously have to pull myself out of these stores!  I love looking at all of the displays, staff recommendations, upcoming events, and all of the extra goodies that each store has to offer.

Since I have been coming to Northern Michigan for so long, McLean & Eakin, has been the independent bookstore that I have frequented the most.  This store is absolutely amazing!  I seriously love everything about it; from its books, displays, people, free gift-wrapping, rewards program, to its Harold and the Purple Crayon t-shirt.  This store has everything that anyone could ask for in an independent bookstore!

When you first approach McLean & Eakin, there is always a new display in the window.  Sometimes it is seasonal, sometimes it involves a local author, or an author that is coming to the store soon to sign books.  Once in the store there is an adult section that is loaded with staff recommendations and book club books.  There is an excellent young adult and local information section.

Past the register (with all of the extra unique goodies), is an absolutley wonderful children's section. They have everything from books (obviously) to supplies to throw a literacy-themed birthday party. If you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, whatever-this is area can't be beat for stocking up on gifts for the year! They have something for everyone! There books are organized by area of interest and reading levels. There is also a hardy non-fiction and local authors section.

McLean & Eakin have so many events planned! A ton of authors visit, they have book clubs, and they offer events for children. We went to an event last summer that was all about the "Ladybug Girl." My daughter listened to the book, completed a craft, and had a snack FOR FREE!

There is an entire downstairs area that I didn’t get pictures of this time around.  To be honest, we usually don’t go down there when we visit because we usually spend all of our time in the children’s section.  The sign says that more than half of their books are down there, including most of their non-fiction.

We ended up purchasing Penny and Her Doll, by Kevin Henkes for my kids and And the Mountains Echoed  by Khaled Hosseini for me and my husband.  While checking out, I found out that they offer a teacher’s discount for books bought for the classroom.  I also signed up for their rewards program which gives you ten dollars for every one hundred dollars spent.

If you are ever in the area, I HIGHLY recommend you check out McLean & Eakin Booksellers!  If you go, make sure to ask for recommendations or advise because the people working there are very knowledgable and willing to help.  Enjoy!
